Decorative plaques to help focus on prayer are made of fabric or paper. Aside from the mizrah – an ornamental wall plaque used to indicate the direction of prayer in Jewish homes and in the synagogue – less well-known zeh ha-shulhan plaques have also been discovered in genizot. The latter may have adorned a festive table, but was more likely to have been placed on a synagogue lectern; very little is still known about its use.
