Group of objects: Personal documents

The genizah also served as a storage space for documents of a personal nature. Photographs and postcards that were perhaps used as bookmarks have been found in synagogue attics, despite the fact that such items do not require genizah. Similarly, this requirement does not apply to personal or business correspondence, personal calendars, and pensioner’s or orphan’s books, even though such items have been placed in genizot by synagogue sextons or other people in the past.
