Group of objects: Synagogue furnishings

In addition to books, scrolls and accessories, genizah finds have also included the remains of holy arks and other architectural features from synagogue interiors, in particular candlesticks. Light has a symbolic meaning in Judaism, which is why all candles used in the synagogue must be kosher. Among the synagogue items discovered in genizot are candle wick trimmers. Other finds include charity bowls, which reflect the importance of philanthropy in Judaism.
