Group of objects: Teaching aids

Of all the Jewish communal institutions, the school is most often represented among items found in genizot. Such items include objects from traditional Jewish religious elementary schools (chadarim, plural of cheder), as well as from later German-language schools (Normalschulen). Genizah finds document, above all, the changes that were made to the content and language of school textbooks. Instead of grammar books on the holy language written in Hebrew and Yiddish, it became increasingly common during the 19th century for German-language textbooks on subjects like mathematics and geography to be placed in genizot. Even so, more modern Hebrew textbooks, primers, and Hebrew dictionaries are still represented among genizah finds until the most recent times. Among the unique school-related finds are class registers, punishment canes, and a payment voucher for cleaning the school toilet.
